Branding and Art Direction

You can judge a phone case by its cover, and Akalade’s artisan leather says excellence and style. Sold exclusively via Amazon, the business engaged Fellow for a brand as distinct as its designs. Inspired by some of the earliest craftsmen, we paired simplicity with power. The resulting mark and typeface ensures Akalade stands out.

01. Research

Akalade was in need of a brand that was bold and had class, but it couldn’t be stuck in one spot. Through in-depth conversation, we got to know Akalade’s goals and aspirations. It led to a concept that would stand the test of time. A mark not just about the products, but the lifestyle they embodied.

02. Exploration

From stonemasons to metalsmiths, craftspeople have used the maker’s mark for centuries to stamp a product as their own. These marks are simple, but they’re powerful, and each one tells a story. In applying this to Akalade we mixed tradition with contemporary, creating a stylised crown icon symbolising luxury and strength.

03. Development

As Akalade’s products are sold exclusively online, there was no room for misinterpretation. We needed to create a design that was bold, legible and tactile – one that looked good in every shot. By pairing a bold crown icon with an equally strong typeface, we developed an easily-identifiable brand stamp. It’s now a defining feature of all products in their range.

04. Implementation

Consistent application is key to brand recognition. We worked closely with the Akalade team to set clear standards for brand application, right down to how the products should be positioned for photos and tips for Instagram success. We’re still in close contact with the client as advisers and consultants, and work to empower Akalade’s creators with the tools for great design.
